
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine Ormond, a laboratory technician , as is John Ormond. She is the second of five children born to her parents. She attended private schools, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady started to attract attention. After a short time in arts college, she was enrolled to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation was in 1988. Ormond first made an appearance in British television in the 1989 show Traffik which focused on the illegal heroin trade from the Far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted daughter of the main character, she was a Home Office minister who was involved in battling heroin imports. The role was well-received right from the start.
